"BettyBoop Designs"

In memory of my granny . . .

They were warriors
My granny's generation
Soft-voiced soldiers
Armored in talcum powder

Starching little cotton dresses
Polishing Sunday-school shoes
With wrinkled old hands as soft
As snow flower petals in the spring

Eyes modestly lowered
They fought wars for us
Dreamed blurry visions
Of a time we would not have to serve

Scraping pennies to give us heavy books
Whose words they couldn't understand
Planting seeds of equality in heads
Whose hair they gently untangled

They were warriors
Who battled with flesh and spirit
To earn for us--their blood and their hope--
What they never dreamed of having for themselves
